POLICE OFFICER

Minimum Qualifications
- Sixty (60) college credits by time of appointment.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of, or ability to obtain, a Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
- United States Citizenship by time of appointment.
- No felony convictions.
- Legally able to possess a firearm.
- Ability to perform essential job functions.
- Not terminated or asked to resign from a permanent full-time job in the past four years (other than layoff).
- Any additional requirements as established by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board or Middleton Police Commission.

Additional Qualifications - Essential Job Functions
A police officer, under general supervision, provides police and emergency services including crime prevention, community problem solving, and law enforcement. Officers must have the ability to perform essential job functions. Essential job functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Operate a law enforcement vehicle during both day and night; in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and on road conditions affected by fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow.
- Exercise independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, when force may be used, and to what degree.
- Communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
- Communicate effectively while gathering information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants.
- Effect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons and resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in self-defense.
- Operate department computers. Dictate, type, and write investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
- Demonstrate communication skills in court and other formal settings.
- Conduct visual and auditory surveillance.
- Pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting patrol vehicles; physically lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles, through openings (doors and windows); jumping from elevated surfaces; crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven surfaces; using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
- Load, unload, aim, and fire handguns, long guns, and other agency firearms from a variety of positions, under conditions of stress, at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards.
- Perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, detaining people, and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.
- Engage in law enforcement patrol functions that include working weekends, different shifts, walking foot patrol, riding a bike, and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure that they are secure.
- Effectively communicate with people by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, solving problems and advising of rights and processes.
- Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of documents such as citations, affidavits, and warrants.
- Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging and carrying people away from dangerous situations and securing and evacuating people from particular areas.
- Detect and collect evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions.
- Perform all lawful assignments as prescribed by the Chief of Police or his/her designee and perform miscellaneous services as required by state law, city ordinance, and department policy.
