Morey Airport Renovation

The City of Middleton purchased the original 160 acre Morey Airport in 1998 for several reasons:  to maintain the airport as part of the region's transportation infrastructure, to provide a buffer between city business parks and prime farmland, and to enhance stormwater management in the vicinity of the North Fork of the Pheasant Branch Creek.

The City worked with the Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics to develop an updated Airport Layout Plan and to acquire the land necessary to undertake airport improvements.  The airport consists of approximately 252 acres, with an additional 6.6 acres devoted to aviation easement and 32 acres devoted to clear zone easement. After several years of planning, construction activities at Middleton Municipal Airport--Morey Field ("C29") got under way in early July, 2003.  In October 2003, work began on the new maintenance hangar and terminal building located just northwest of the intersection of Airport Road and Deming Way.  The new terminal building opened in May 2004.  Paving of the new taxiway was initiated in May 2004.  It was then used as the temporary runway to allow pilots to use the airport while the old runway was removed and the new, 4000' long by 100'. wide runway was constructed.  "Runway 10/28" became operational on October 7, 2004.Construction of individual box hangars and t-hangars began in October 2004 once land improvements were substantially completed.

The total cost of the airport renovations will exceed $7 million.  Federal, State, and City have cost-shared expenses related to land acquisition, grading, runway & taxiway construction, installation of utilities, and construction of the service road and parking areas.  According to figures provided by the Bureau of Aeronautics, as of September 2004, the Federal share of this project has been $3,892,263; the State's share $1,455,701; and the City of Middleton $1,665,834.  It is likely that local costs will increase slightly in order to complete landscaping and other relatively minor expenses which aren't cost-shared by other sources.  If one includes the costs to develop the new terminal building and maintenance hangar, which was undertaken by the Middleton Area Development Corporation, then the total project cost is around $8 million.
